Lincoln Game Nights by Shaw
Every Tuesday night, our Lincoln RA, Darius, puts together and hosts a sports night in the campus gym from six to eight pm. Sports include: volleyball, racketball, basketball, hockey, and NZ Football. Volleyball was my favorite sport to play. On one of the nights, we were even able to teach Darius how to play volleyball and American football, both of which gave us all a good laugh. With sports being an important part of my life, these nights helped combat my homesickness. Tuesday game nights have been a staple to my enjoyment here. Endless laughs reminded me of the times I used to run around in gym class with my friends. The different varieties of games provided us with a competitive, yet fun activity. The exercise was also a relaxing and engaging way to refresh our minds. To Darius, it didn’t matter if you knew how to play the sport. The only thing that mattered was that you were laughing and enjoying yourself.
We never had to question if we were having fun. Unplugging from the world, having a good time, and making memories, were what these game nights were all about. We also learned that these events weren’t unique to our group. Darius extends this joy to the Lincoln students and community.
Darius' efforts to make these nights so special for us did not go unnoticed. He took his time introducing himself to each of us, expressing interest in our hometowns and hobbies. His fun and outgoing personality made these nights even better. We were fortunate enough to be able to give
Darius a gift to show him our appreciation for game night and all the memories and laughs.
But it wasn’t just about the games. It was about all the relationships made and strengthened during these nights, that made them so special. Acting as a community-building activity, many of us connected and became closer. An example of this is my new friend Hannah. These nights allowed for us to create inside jokes and share endless belly laughs as a result. This made me comfortable enough to be myself around these new people, ultimately making lifelong friendships.
The people and the place were what made these nights amazing, and I cannot thank Darius enough for creating such a safe space!!
