Our First Three Days in New Zealand by Becca
Kia ora from New Zealand! We were greeted with unusually cold and rainy weather here when we landed, but despite that, we enjoyed our first few days getting to know each other and exploring the areas around us. Our first days have been spent mostly in the classroom because of the rain. Our lectures are aimed at preparing us for our upcoming excursions. So far we have covered an introduction to sustainable agriculture and livestock and dairy production in New Zealand. We also watched a New Zealand film after class on our third day here. Whale Rider, the movie, combines Maori stories and everyday life and culture. It follows Paikea, a young girl who proves she can be a strong chief despite some believing she could not be because of her gender. It is a beautiful story that we all enjoyed immensely and some tears were even shed.
We also enjoyed the beach, a scavenger hunt, and eating meals together. At the beach, we explored the town of Sumner, ate ice cream, and ran into the freezing ocean water. Afterward, we bonded on our first nerve-racking, winding bus ride through the hills that gave us some amazing views. Once we returned to campus we were divided into groups to complete a scavenger hunt. We were tasked with finding twelve buildings and landmarks in town and on campus, which included the dairy (convenience store), library, bus station, fish and chips shop, and more. The group that found the most correct landmarks and had the most creative photos won. While completing this challenge we had to hold hands, link arms, etc at all times. We also got to know our group members during the walk so we could introduce one another to the whole cohort at the end of the hunt. Walking to our meals has provided some of the best opportunities to get to know each other. With about a twenty-minute walk into the center of Lincoln, I have enjoyed talking with everyone and then eating a good meal together. Some early favorite restaurants in town are the Famous Grouse Hotel, The Laboratory, and the fish and chips shop.
Overall, we have enjoyed our first few days here. Dr. Griffiths and Susan have even said we are one of the most talkative groups they have had. Stay tuned to hear more about our adventures in agriculture and more!
