Stevens Hall by Caroline McKnight
After
arriving at Lincoln University on January 3rd, we were shown to
where we would be staying for the next month, Stevens Hall. We were divided into
groups that would become our pods. My pod members are Ariana, Izzy, Leah,
Julia, and Fiona, who I had never met before. Since most people in the program
are pre-vet majors, me being only one of two Food and Agribusiness Marketing
majors is a little challenging. I am really looking forward to becoming friends
with people in the program and being in the pods allows us to get to know our
peers better. The pod consists of four to six bedrooms with a bathroom (with
great shower pressure!) and a small kitchen area. I was happy to have my own
room which was much more spacious than I was expecting. I was worried about
what my room would be like, since I hadn’t seen any photos of dorm rooms from
past years. The rooms have large closets and plenty of desk and cabinet space
as well. Our rooms also have large windows that let in plenty of natural light
and can be opened to let in fresh air. The windows have curtains that are great
for blocking out light for bedtime since it does not get dark until about 9:30
PM which is very different from home this time of year. The dark curtains came
in handy the first night after arriving at school, and I slept amazing after
the long journey here. After two days of flying, it felt great to catch up on
some much-needed sleep!
The
pod-style format of rooming at Lincoln University is much more to my liking in
comparison to the dormitories at University of Delaware. So far, having done
some schoolwork in my room it is much easier to concentrate on assignments with
the room to myself. Another positive to the single rooms is being able to call
family members at home without having to worry about bothering roommates.
Stevens
Hall is equipped with a lounge that has a TV, couches, and a pool table, which
is a great place to meet up with peers during our free time. I have been into
the lounge so far to do schoolwork and play pool, which was fun! The lounge
also houses the laundry machines, with three washers and three dryers. Stevens
Hall is a short walk to the dining hall and our classroom, in comparison to UD,
where the hike to class can be rough at times. The views from our windows
surrounding the dormitory are very beautiful and surrounded by plenty of
greenery, and lots of birds (which can be a little loud at times!).
Overall,
the dormitory here at Lincoln University was a pleasant surprise, and I look
forward to living in Stevens Hall for the remainder of my time studying abroad!
